Hope Tech Foundation: Secondhand Tech Donation & Resale Policy
1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the ethical, transparent, and responsible handling of all secondhand technology donated to Hope Tech Foundation. This includes determining suitability for direct donation to beneficiaries or, when appropriate, resale to fund our mission of providing new, high-quality tech to children and teenagers with cancer.
2. Acceptance of Secondhand Donations
We gratefully accept donations of computers, components, laptops, accessories, and peripherals.
Donated items must be in good working condition or repairable.
We prefer newer technology (ideally within 3–5 years old) for direct gifting, to ensure compatibility with modern games, applications, and performance standards.
We reserve the right to refuse any item that poses a safety risk or is beyond economical repair.
3. Assessment Process
All donated items will be:
Tested for functionality
Inspected for safety
Wiped of all personal data (in accordance with UK GDPR and data security standards)
Evaluated for suitability for one of two pathways:
- Gifting to beneficiaries via our nomination program
- Resale through e-commerce platforms to generate funds for new equipment
4. Resale Ethics & Use of Proceeds
Items not suitable for gifting will be resold via platforms such as eBay or other resale avenues approved by the trustees.
100% of net proceeds from these sales will be used to support the foundation’s mission — including purchasing new tech for nominees, covering essential operational costs, or enhancing program delivery.
All resale listings will clearly state that the item has been donated and that the sale supports Hope Tech Foundation.
We do not profit personally from any resale activities; all funds remain within the charity.
5. Transparency
Donors are informed that their items may be sold if they are not suitable for direct donation.
A yearly report will be prepared for trustees showing total items received, number of units gifted, resold, or recycled.
The charity maintains full financial records of all resale transactions for auditing and compliance with Charity Commission guidelines.
6. Environmental Responsibility
Any tech that cannot be reused or resold will be recycled responsibly in accordance with WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations.
We aim to reduce landfill waste by repairing, repurposing, or recycling wherever possible.
7. Donor Rights
Donors may specify if they would not like their items to be resold, in which case the items will be assessed for direct donation only.
Donors may request confirmation of how their donation was used (gifted, sold, recycled).
8. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or in response to major changes in donation volume, resale practices, or legal requirements.
